Rialto Theatre and the plan for a lease to Limassol municipality

A government decision brings the Heroes’ Square theatre closer to municipal stewardship. The announcement, a little history and a reason to visit this month.

Rialto has a place in Limassol’s plans beyond the next performance. On 14 October, the municipality welcomed a cabinet decision to complete the state’s acquisition of the theatre building and lease it to the city.

What the decision means

The announcement concerns the building’s future ownership and lease. It does not give a completed handover date or announce changes to ticket prices. For audiences, the next useful detail will be how the transition affects the theatre’s programme.

A cinema that found a second life

Built in 1930, Rialto closed in the mid-1980s. The Limassol Cooperative Savings Bank bought it in 1991, and the restored theatre reopened on 15 May 1999. That history makes a visit to Heroes’ Square more than a stop at another performance venue.

An evening at Rialto this month

An evening of Antonis Vardis songs is coming up on Sunday 25 October. Our guide brings the concert details together; the calendar has other dates if Sunday does not suit.
